2 out of 3 Brits suffer Sunday night fear by Amber Rolfe ‘Sunday fear’ kicks in from 1:20pm on Sunday afternoonWorkload, commute, and salary are voted the worst things at work 1 in 5 would ‘remove’ a particular colleague if given the choiceUnfortunately, not everyone loves their job, with a number of people suffering from ‘Sunday night fear’ in the run up to a new work-week.We surveyed 2,000 UK workers, to  find out what they dread most â€" and determine what it would take to make them actually love Mondays.Sunday peaks at midday Whilst ‘Sunday night fear’ (fear of the working week ahead) is typically associated with the evening, our survey suggests that the dread hits much earlier â€" practically cutting the day in half.In fact, two out of three UK workers admit to suffering from ‘Sunday night fear’ as early as 1:20pm on Sunday afternoon. This means that if the average person wakes up at 9am on Sunday, they’re only enjoying four hours of ‘work free’ time.And it doesn’t stop there. Anxieti es are likely to heighten as the day goes on, with 39% of people feeling the weekend is well and truly over early every Sunday evening.But what is it that fills so many UK workers with dread on the run up to Monday?Bad commutes and annoying co-workers The biggest cause of ‘Sunday night fear’ is simply going back to unfinished tasks from the past week â€" according to almost a third of us. In other words, everything we put off on Friday coming back to haunt us.So it’s no surprise that the beginning of a new week feels like anything but a ‘new start’.A terrible commute and irritating colleagues are also amongst the top three reasons to fear the week ahead, with 1 in 5 saying they’d remove a particular colleague in a bid to improve their work life.An additional 12% admitted they’d be happier if they could say goodbye to work emails for good.  Mondays are made by perks Even though it may seem inevitable, ‘Sunday night fear’ doesn’t have to plague our weekends.When it comes to making Mondays great, a massive 97% of those surveyed said that job satisfaction was the most important factor in avoiding ‘the fear’.But that’s not all it takes. Over a quarter of respondents said flexible working hours would help them look forward to the week ahead, with the option to work from home coming in as the second most important perk.Other things that contribute to loving Mondays include having great colleagues, free lunches or breakfasts, and quicker commutes.Creative and real estate careers voted the happiest  According to our survey, happiness is pretty closely linked to the industry we work in.94% of those in creative industries and in real estate are most likely to be satisfied in their job, but only 74% of public administration and defence workers admit they’re content with their career.And when it comes to the best and worst parts of work â€" the opinions were somewhat divided across sectors.Whilst people working in public administration, transpo rt, and tourism, consider work-life balance to be paramount, our survey suggests that for those in finance and hospitality â€" salary and rewards are number one.Additionally, tourism workers are most likely want emails to be a thing of the past, whilst those in public administration would be much happier without meetings. Chapter 1 of My Journey as an Entrepreneur

Chapter 1 of My Journey as an Entrepreneur So rather than a career or personal finance lesson, today Im going to share what being a budding entrepreneur has been like for me lately.   A few words that immediately come to mind: coffee, energy, passion, and time management.  Lets start with coffee.   Yes, I read and loved Skinny Bitch and I know coffee is not the best habit to hold. Yet without it, Im not sure how I could manage to write blog posts, launch a new website site, maintain a partnership with The Mindset of Wealth in Washington D.C., in addition to working a full time job in Commercial Banking that I really enjoy, work out and sleep. I always swore I would never be a coffee drinker because my parents are completely hooked on it, and of course I never wanted to do what they did. Yet now that Im older, I see how my Mom ran a successful company, played Mom to 3 kids, cooked fabulous dinners most nights and made sure we all had what we needed. Thank God coffee is a legal substance, because to me it is a wonder drug that helps you make the most of your day. Caffeine isnt enough to start the engine of an entrepreneur though. For me it has taken an incredible amount of mental energy. Energy is important for me when I dont feel like getting on conference call number 5 over my lunch break, waking up at 6am to run before work because I know I cant do it after, coming up with new ideas, or focusing 100% on my job while I am there. Perhaps a better word for this energy is discipline. Sometimes its hard to make myself connect with others to market what Im doing, or focus on developing a project Im working on. Yet somehow I love what Im doing so much that my mental energy carries me through. That leads us to passion. It hasnt taken me long to figure out that you must be completely obsessed and in love with your entrepreneurial venture. Why? Because you will breathe, think and dream it constantly and live every moment of your day thinking about it. If youre like me, you will talk about it while socializing at a bar with new people, you will talk about it the minute you get home from work and sometimes get up in the middle of the night to jot down a fleeting idea. Perhaps that sounds a bit crazy to some, but for me it has been crucial in getting things done. I learned in one of my Ladies Who Launch workshops that female entrepreneurs are especially known to think of their business as their baby. Or even as an extension of themselves which they identify with. This is absolutely true for me. As I develop the new and improved version of this blog (which will soon be called Ms. Career Girl) and make it into an interactive site for women, I see my personality and things I need help with being brought to life through the new site. In addition to the blog posts, there will be tools, job postings, networking events, more personal finance information, ask a professional career girl, recommended reading and more. The eight year old girl in me who talked to her friends and family about being a business woman when she grew up is coming to life. Now I see why I played office instead of house, and preferred riding my pink BMX boys bike to playing with dolls. I see why coming downtown Chicago to visit my aunt while she was in law school excited me so much. I see why Ive always been obsessed with Oprah and what she has done for so many women around the world. I feel less strange for wanting to read books any extra minute I get, because I see that the information I get from these books can be used to help and inspire others. Its so weird how all my little personality traits have come together and can be reflected through my entrepreneurial venture. Lastly, time management. I think weve gone over how I manage my time enough, but I do want to share something quick that I learned this weekend at another one of my Ladies Who Launch workshops. As my leader Megan McKenzie says, time management is a myth because you cant create time. Therefore heres a trick to make the most out of what you DO have. Take a 3 x 5 index card and look at it vertically. At the top write todays date. Under that, write your top 4 items you want to get done that day. One of those items must be for you. Draw a line beneath those four items. Any items below that line are tasks that can be pushed to tomorrow. I started using this little time management tool this week and its crazy how much more focus I have had. Ive  accomplished more  this week than usual. Try it! So, thats what Ive been up to lately. As things get off of the ground, Ill be sure to write Chapter 2 of my journey as I know it will be an evolving experience with many lessons. In the meantime, its coffee time for me! Ciao!

Should Auld Aquaintance Be Forgot - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Tonight we will celebrate the end of 2009 and herald in a new decade.   From private parties and entire city celebrations to safe home celebrations, we all have our own way of saying “goodbye to 2009”.   Somewhere in the activities you are bound to hear the song “Auld Lang Syne”.   It’s an old Scottish poem meaning “times gone by”.   So, should be forget acquaintances from times gone by?   Not if we hope to be successful in the new decade. Extracting your brand is important.   Expressing it in a way that is authentic to your personal strengths is vital.   Yet, without cultivating and nurturing your acquaintances then who and how will anyone know of you or your brand attributes? Starting 2010 right First, if you don’t know your brand attributes and if you have not taken the time or effort to develop a communication for your brand â€" then do that first.   Having a great communication plan makes no difference if you don’t have a strong brand message or understand your unique promise of value. Second, clean out your database. All of the people in your contact list or whatever program you use to house people’s contact information needs to be reviewed.   People change jobs, get married, get divorced, move or get iphones and change their numbers!   Clean your existing database and make it your focus to add all those additional business cards to your database and get rid of that clutter!   Business card scanners, a neat receipt scanner and even a virtual assistant can help get this done quickly. Next, decide who and how you would like to stay connected with your contacts. Not sure who, maybe starting with the basic 18 connections you need to be successful would give a basic structure to who to put on your immediate list of contacts. Why stay connected? You never know who someone is, who they’ll become or who they influence.   Staying in relationship with people will make you memorable since common behavior is to lose contact and only rekindle that connection when you need something. Yet, the sincerity of the connection will determine how you nurture, develop and motivate that relationship.   Relationships with people are vital to any of our success plans â€" personally and professionally.   You are built by your associations â€" more than you know. Keeping touch with acquaintances With just a few hours left in 2009, it’s time for you to make some decisions.   What worked for you in 2009?   Where do you want to be in 2010? Could it be that you want to create a community? Start a Twitter chat? Create a Facebook Fan Page? Become better at networking and follow-up skills? Craft a system to stay in touch? Better organize your contact list? Begin a blog? Start a eNewsletter? Begin   a vlog? What will you do differently to make those things you want happen? Make a list of what you want to happen.   Write specifically “how” or what aspects would make you feel successful.   After writing that list, take each item and break it down into 7 actionable steps.   Start crafting a plan to take specific actions that will make your goals inevitable. How to get respect at work - Ever go to a restaurant and get seated in the very back? The minute you sit down, you realize youre going to be in for a long night because the waiter always seems to forget youre there? What if the same thing happens at work and you get seated in the equivalent of kids table. In that case, you wind up with a lot worse than cold soup and an empty drinking glass: you could be passed over for opportunities that could improve your career. There are a lot of reasons why people seem to be out of sight, out of mind at work. While a poor cubicle or office location can be an obvious way to marginalize someone, other situations also contribute to many talented people being left out in the cold. For example, if you telecommute, or if you absent yourself from staff social and networking events, it is easy for others to forget you when the time comes to pass out the plum projects. How can you keep the spotlight on your accomplishments and potential if you drew a poor seat or arent in the office regularly? Keep these tips in mind for various situations if you want to take charge of your career: You telecommute If you never see your colleagues in person, dont be surprised when they forget about you! Use technology to keep in touch. Between email, IM, texting, phone calls and even video or Skype meetings, you can make it seem like youre right next door, instead of two or three states away. When you dont have true face time with the boss or your team, the onus is even more on you to stay engaged via FaceTime or another technology tool. No matter how busy you are, schedule regular opportunities to touch base to update your boss on your projects and to discuss plans for the future. If you fly under the radar, its your own fault. Youre an introvert Not everyone likes to attend in-person networking events or happy hours. Regardless of your preference, in some office environments, its clear that being engaged personally with colleagues and supervisors is key to success. Do your best to participate in staff get-togethers as often as possible, and consider offering to arrange opportunities to socialize that are more conducive to your preferences. For example, if every staff networking event is at the corner tavern and you dont drink, think of more palatable alternatives. Set up a co-ed staff soccer or softball league, a viewing party for a television program everyone enjoys or a book club. While these may still take you out of your comfort zone, at least youll have some say about the event if you are planning it, so it should be a little easier to manage. If the result is a great, casual conversation with your boss (or the bosss boss) that lands you a great gig, it will have been worth it. Every organization needs and values its volunteers and leaders, so this is a great way to grow the number of people who know and like you and may be willing to refer you to a better opportunity than the one you have. Its up to you Dont take a poor situation at work sitting down. Be the squeaky wheel and let superiors know how youre contributing, even if it is from around the globe or from the back cubicle.
